Enchanting church for weddings in Rome
The twin churches of Rome
Entering this majestic square, you will soon notice at least two unusual things: an obelisk, and unexpectedly two identical churches commonly known as the twin churches. Seen from the centre of the iconic square, for a purely optical effect, the twin churches look identical from the outside, but as you walk in, you will find the main difference: the church on the right is circular, whilst the other has an elliptical floor plan.
As a stunning catholic ceremony venue, we selected Our Lady of miracles which has a fascinating story linked to an old legend.
If your wedding destination is Rome, and you love old legends, keep this enchanting church for weddings in mind!
A fascinating miracle legend
It all started with a small fresco of St. Mary and the divine child, located in an arched niche near the riverbank of the Tiber river.
According to an old legend, on June 20th of 1325, a woman prayed to an image of the Virgin Mary on the riverbank to save her child who was drowning in the waters of the Tiber River. Her son was saved, and following the miraculous event, a little chapel was built by the river to honour Virgin Mary and the painting was soon moved in there.

Some historical facts
In 1662 Pope Alexander VII ordered a pair of churches to be erected on the square to provide a monumental backdrop to the piazza, to amaze anyone walking in through the main gate. One of the twin churches chose to honour Our Lady of Miracles, became a sacred place to house the so venerated painting. Currently, a duplicate of the icon hangs over the high altar of the church, specifically designed to display and enshrine the famous painting. Santa Maria dei Miracoli was built in 1675. However, it was consecrated and open to the public only years later in 1681.
It's easy to discover who financed the construction, whose specifically requested, for being mentioned in the decorations of both churches: the cardinal Girolamo Gastaldi.
