Can non-Italian citizens get married in Italy?
Sure you can! In Italy, foreign citizens are allowed to celebrate their wedding and to make it legally binding.
As a foreign citizen, if you would like to get your wedding legally recognized in your home country, there are a few procedures that you need to follow, and we recommend planning it at least six months before the wedding.
The procedures are quite simple, but to avoid "getting lost" in bureaucracy matters, you could contact us, and we will be pleased to assist you, step by step, to make sure you get all the documents and paperwork ready on time, avoiding any kind of stress. We are long experienced dealing with all the procedures required for any kind of ceremony you might choose, and accordingly with your origin country directories (some countries might require extra documents), the local Italian laws and the type of wedding if civil or religious.

What paperwork and documents do I need to get married in Italy?
Depending on your origin country (EU citizens or non-EU citizens) and their agreements with Italy you might require extra documents, but generally, these are the documents requested for all the countries. We suggest taking a look at your home country’s Italian consular or embassy website, at least 6 months beforehand, to fix an appointment with your local authorities, to apply for necessary paperwork required for a civil, religious or symbolic wedding in Italy.
The Nulla Osta, if issued in the language of the country of origin, must be translated into Italian and legalized by the Italian Embassy or Consulate, except if specific Conventions eliminate this requirement. It must indicate the following data: name, surname, date, and place of birth, paternity and maternity, citizenship, legal residence, and free status (specifying whether the person is single, divorced, widowed, indicating the date of divorce or widowhood).
If you wish to have a more detailed and specific list of the documents required to get married in Rome do not hesitate to contact us.
Necessary documentation to get married in Italy is:
- Passport for non-EU citizens
- Original birth certificate for both parties
- Passport or foreign identity card for EU citizens
- Nulla Osta - a “no impediment certificate” sworn before a consular office of your home country, stating that there's no legal impediment to your marriage in your home country
- Divorce papers or death certificate if you have been previously married, divorced or widowed

How long do you need to be in Italy before getting married?
If you have all the documents ready usually, 2-3 days are more than enough but depending on your nationality and the city of your marriage, you may need to be in Italy at least 7 days before getting married to legalise documents purchased in your home country. Therefore if you have a chance to visit Italy at least 3 or 6 months before the wedding, you can prepare all the paperwork, and then just show up on the day of the wedding! Surely a good reason to visit Rome before your big event!
Please note that under Italian law, all public documents originating from outside the EU are considered valid for only six months from the date of issue. Therefore, you should make sure that all the documents to be submitted to Italian authorities have not been issued more than six months ahead of the marriage.

Which kind of wedding celebrations can be performed in Italy?
Italy legally recognises religious and civil weddings. Couples are also free to celebrate symbolic ceremonies, although they're not legally binding.
The majority of Italian weddings take place in a roman catholic church with a catholic ceremony, however, Italy recognises civil weddings and religious weddings from all faiths, including Jewish, Hindu and Muslim religions. In most cases, the marriage process under these religions is similar in any country, including Italy, and you might need to apply for a civil wedding as well to make it legally recognized.
Civil Wedding or Religious weddings?
Religious Ceremony: A catholic ceremony is considered valid if performed by a Roman Catholic priest. A separate civil ceremony will not be necessary, as the priest will register the marriage with the civil authorities. If a Roman Catholic wedding is your case, your church should be your first point of contact until you have the first Nulla Osta issued.
All the documents will have to be ready and sent to the Italian bishop concerned at least 2-3 months before the wedding.
For non-Catholic religious weddings, you’ll be required to prove you're civilly married before you can celebrate in a religious house of worship.
If you are planning such a religious ceremony, you should consult with your religious leader far in advance of the actual ceremony.
Civil Ceremony: A civil ceremony, is celebrated by the mayor or one of his deputies, two witnesses, and if necessary, an interpreter must be present at the ceremony.
For civil weddings, Rome offers two unique venues: the magnificent Red Hall in Campidoglio or at the Vignola Mattei in the complex of the Terme di Caracalla. Eventually, for a more exclusive wedding, we can apply for a special license to allow a legally binding civil wedding ceremony, in a castle or private villa in Rome, or in the beautiful surroundings of Rome.
Getting married in Rome has a wide selection of options for any kind of celebration you might desire.
